Her old man finds out that they have rich relatives and ties one on at the local pub. So, Tess goes to town in his place. On the way, she falls asleep and kills their horse; so she has to go beg money from the relatives. When she arrives, she meets her cousin for the first time, and he is a real hunk. At first she objects when he tries to hit on her. But then he feeds her strawberries, and so she lets him show her a good time. After a few weeks, she breaks up with d'Urberville and goes home to have a baby who dies and gets buried. Then she meets Angel. After he carries her across a puddle, they get married. But when he finds out that she already made it with d'Urberville, he dumps her and goes to South America. She gets a job and works for a while. Then she kills a man, shacks up with Angel, who is back, and eventually gets hanged. I think the book could have been shorter, but it's good because it shows how much better we are without these stupid Victorian ideals. Any girl today would have put the squeeze on old lady d'Urberville or at the very least would have seduced Angel rather than let him get away. And I don't see how Angel could have dumped Tess, who was evidently a real looker. These people should get with reality -- ideals are definitely out. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
